• Besides, Yakushiji has the Buddhist temple of this name in everywhere in Japan though Yakushiji, headquarters of a Hasso Buddhist sect in Nara is famous. Because Pharmacist Buddha is assumed to be a principal image, this name Yakushiji or "Temple of Pharmacist Buddha" is named. Yakushiji is the headquarters of a Buddhist sect of Hasso Dharma Sect of Buddhism in Nara with Kofuku-ji Temple. It is counted by one of seven big temples in the south capital. The principal image is pharmacist Buddha, and the founder is Emperor Tenmu. It is registered the UNESCO World Heritage partially of Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara in 1998.

• According to 'Yakushiji history' (approved in 1015), Emperor Tenmu created in Asuka in 680 to pray for a sick recovery of the empress of Unonosarasa who was the following emperor Jito. Emperor Tenmu died before seeing the completion of the temple, and the cathedral construction was succeeded to emperor Jito and Emperor Monmu. It is understood from the event, which was held in 688 in Yakushiji by historical materials, that the construction seems to have been finished by this time. Afterwards, when the capital moved to Heiankyo in 710, Yakushiji was transferred to the present place in Heiankyo from Asuka. The transference was in 718. It seems that the construction has continued in 730, when the east tower has completed. It is said that the east tower is a new building and the principal image was moved from the old Yakushiji.

• Yakushiji in Heijokyo lost a lot of buildings with the fire in 973 and Junko Tsutsui's fire of war in 1528. The building of the Nara era is only the east tower now. Koin Takada known as a famous superintendent priest was centered since 1960, the Hakuho cathedral reconstruction effort by the hand-copying of susutras was advanced, the central hall was rebuilt in 1976, and the West tower, central gate, corridor, and large auditorium, etc. were rebuilt one after another.
