• Notre Dame de Paris, often known simply as Notre Dame in English, is a Gothic cathedral on the eastern half of the Île de la Cité in Paris, France, with its main entrance to the west. It is still used as a Roman Catholic cathedral and is the seat of the Archbishop of Paris. Notre Dame de Paris is widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. • We owe the first City Hall building to the King of France, Francois I (1515-1547). In 1533, he decided to endow the city with a City Hall worthy of the Parisians. He appointed two architects; an Italian, Dominique de Cortone (nicknamed Boccador because of his red beard) and a Frenchman, Pierre Chambiges. Steeped in the spirit of the Renaissance, Boccador drew up the plans for a building that was tall, spacious, full of light and refined. Construction began in 1533 but was not completed until 1628, during the reign of Louis XIII.
  WARS OF RELIGION
  This generic term refers to a series of eight civil struggles triggered by religious differences, which bathed France blood from 1562 to 1598 and brought into conflict the Catholics and the Protestants (known at the time as Huguenots).
  This insurrectional movement, which took place in Paris, was directed against the government of the time. The conflict raged from March to May 1871.
  The Commune has many, more or less immediate causes. Paris and in particular the city's poorer classes, had suffered greatly the previous winter during the Prussian siege. The surrender of Paris and the arrival of Prussian soldiers in the city on 1 March further increased the anger of the population, already restless since February. The revolt became official on 18 March.
  After the Commune fire, a competition was held to rebuild a new Hotel de Ville. Of the 68 applicants, two architects - Theodore Ballu and Edouard Deperthes - won the contest with a project that was very similar, outwardly, to the building which had burnt down. When the new edifice was inaugurated in July 1882, the bulk of the work had barely been completed, and the Municipal Council was only able to occupy its new meeting room a year later.
